How to Store Cookies to Keep Them Fresh: A Complete Guide
There's nothing quite as disappointing as reaching for a cookie only to find it's gone stale and lost that perfect chewy texture. The good news? With the right storage techniques, you can keep your cookies fresh and delicious for much longer. Here's everything you need to know about storing cookies properly.
Room Temperature Storage (Most Cookies)
For most cookies - including our Cookie Pies, Deep Dish Cookies, and Cookie Bars - room temperature storage is ideal. The key is an airtight container.
Here's what to do:
Use a container with a tight-fitting lid - plastic containers or biscuit tins work well. If you're storing different types of cookies, keep them separate as flavours can transfer and crispy cookies can absorb moisture from softer ones. A piece of bread in the container can help maintain moisture for chewy cookies. Replace the bread every couple of days.
Stored this way, most cookies will stay fresh for 5-7 days.
Refrigerating Cookies
Some cookies benefit from refrigeration, particularly those with cream-based toppings, fresh fruit, or cream cheese frostings. Our Loaded Cookies with their generous spread toppings can be refrigerated if you prefer a firmer texture.
Important: Always bring refrigerated cookies to room temperature before eating (about 15-20 minutes) to restore that soft, chewy texture. Cold cookies can taste bland and feel hard.
Freezing Cookies for Later
Freezing is brilliant for long-term storage and works surprisingly well with most cookie types. Here's how to do it properly:
Wrap cookies individually in cling film or place parchment paper between layers. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag, removing as much air as possible. Label with the date - frozen cookies keep well for up to 3 months.
To thaw, remove cookies from the freezer and leave at room temperature for 1-2 hours. For that fresh-from-the-oven taste, warm them in the oven at 150C for 5-10 minutes.
Reviving Slightly Stale Cookies
Left your cookies out a bit too long? Don't throw them away - there are ways to bring them back to life.
The microwave method: Place a cookie on a plate with a damp paper towel over it. Microwave for 10-15 seconds. The moisture from the paper towel will soften the cookie.
The oven method: Place cookies on a baking tray and warm at 150C for 5-10 minutes. This works particularly well for our Deep Dish Cookies, restoring that gooey centre.

Signs Your Cookies Have Gone Stale
Not sure if your cookies are still good? Look for these signs: a hard, dry texture instead of soft and chewy; lack of aroma (fresh cookies smell amazing); visible drying around the edges; or an 'off' taste. If in doubt, the microwave trick above can help you decide if they're worth saving or if it's time to order a fresh batch.
